Competing Conventions with Costly Information Acquisition

چکیده

We consider an evolutionary model of social coordination in a 2 × game where two groups players prefer to coordinate on different actions. Players can pay cost learn their opponent’s group: if they it, condition actions concerning the groups. assess stability outcomes long run using stochastic analysis. find that three elements matter for equilibrium selection: group size, strength preferences, and information’s cost. If is too high, never opponents run. one stronger preferences its favorite action than other, or size sufficiently large compared other group, every player plays group’s action. both are strong enough none groups’ sizes enough, play miscoordinate inter-group interactions. Lower levels favor coordination. Indeed, when low, inside-group interactions, always action, while enough.

Auction Equilibrium with Costly Information Acquisition

This paper presents a simple model of auction equilibrium. The distinctive feature of the model is that each bidder may discover the value that the item represents for herself, provided she spends some amount in order to be well informed. For each agent, the decision of whether or not to acquire information depends on a private cost of information acquisition and on her conjectures regarding th...

Optimal Contracts with Costly Information Acquisition

This paper analyzes a dynamic moral-hazard model where a principal searches for an opportunity of uncertain return, and hires an agent to evaluate potential options that arrive stochastically over time. The agent’s effort affects the informativeness of a signal about an option’s return. Based on the information provided by the agent, the principal decides whether or not to exercise an option at...

Optimal voting schemes with costly information acquisition

A group of individuals with identical preferences must make a decision under uncertainty about which decision is best. Before the decision is made, each agent can privately acquire a costly and imperfect signal. We discuss how to design a mechanism for eliciting and aggregating the collected information so as to maximize ex-ante social welfare. We first show that, of all mechanisms, a sequentia...

Monopolistic Nonlinear Pricing with Costly Information Acquisition∗

We consider costly information acquisition in the canonical monopolistic nonlinear pricing model (Mussa and Rosen, 1978; Maskin and Riley, 1984) so that consumers need to incur privately known entry costs in order to learn their preference “intensities” for the quality of the product. We show that by taking into account costly information acquisition, the nature of optimal nonlinear pricing con...

Auctions with Dynamic Costly Information Acquisition

We study the mechanism design problem for a seller of an indivisible good in a setting where privately informed buyers can acquire additional information and refine their valuations for the good at a cost. For this setting, we propose optimal (revenue-maximizing) and efficient (welfare-maximizing) mechanisms that induce a right level of investment in information acquisition. We show that becaus...
